Rotherfield United Football Club have acquired Bishopswood Sports Ground as their new home ground. The agreement concludes 18 months of negotiation and legal process to provide the club with a significant increase in its facilities and available space.
Club Chairman Andy Davies said 'whilst it is sad to leave the old ground we have outgrown it and cannot accommodate the 20 teams that now play for the club. The relocation of Peppard primary school effectively stopped us being able to expand on the site and we had to look elsewhere, but it was important to stay close to our origins. Bishopswood offers the club the ideal opportunity to realise its potential and develop excellent facilities in the future. We will continue to allow other clubs and teams to use the facility, including baseball and tennis, as our aim is to build a thriving sporting facility.'
Rotherfield United Football Club was established in 1973 and bought its original ground on the B481 from the Oxfordshire County Council in 1982.
Davies went on to say 'My thanks goes to all the hard working volunteers at the club, they truly make Rotherfield a special club. Furthermore we mustn't forget the efforts of the founding members of the club who managed to purchase our original ground. Without their efforts we would not have be in a position to take advantage of the opportunity to acquire Bishopswood.'
Rotherfield achieved FA Charter Standard status in 2010 and runs teams from Under 5 through to adult including its 1st team which playing in the top division of the Reading League.
Bishopswood was sold by South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) to a private buyer in 2007. Public use of the land is permitted for informal recreation, however restrictions and controls can be placed on public access to ensure that formal activities can take place in a safe and hazard free manner.
Rotherfield's acquisition does not include the part of the woodland that was included in the 2007 transfer. This remains in the ownership of Bishopswood Pavilion Limited.
The club's longer term plans include building a new club house and an all weather pitch.
The club will be holding a public meeting in February to present and discuss its plan for Bishopswood Sports Ground.
